Our County
Merced County lies in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley in Central California.
It's flat land and access to water supports an agricultural economy. Merced
County’s 1.25 million acres are primarily rural. The 2000 census calculated
population at 210,554. Merced County’s population is very diverse, with the
majority ethnicity (45%) being Latino. While the county residents are 40% white
(non-Hispanic), there is a large Asian population (8%). Approximately 18% of the
county’s population is employed in agricultural services, most earning well
below the federal poverty level. Merced County’s education level is below the
State average. Combined, these statistics support the need for a culturally
appropriate and sensitive solution to any challenge.
